The number of hardware patents filed by Microsoft in the field of smartphones seems small compared to Apple, Samsung and LG. Perhaps the most exciting new hardware product from the company in recent years is the Surface Duo. However, the Dutch website LetsGoDigital recently announced the release of a patent application entitled "Logo Camera" by the company, which was apparently already registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in October 2020. In addition, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently filed a patent application in May.

Microsoft announced the production of a clamshell device called Surface Duo in 2019 and released it a year later ; The product is made of two completely separate screens that are connected to each other with a hinge in the center. One of the most important criticisms that experts have made of this Microsoft product, apart from the old design, goes back to the single camera in this device. This camera, which can also be used as a selfie camera due to the rotation of the Surface Duo screen, is an 11-megapixel model with an aperture of f/2.0 and can capture normal quality images. Now that the patent application has been filed, it appears that Microsoft is seeking to upgrade the camera system to the next generation of Surface Duo clamshell devices. And its design is done using the four-color logo of this company. In fact, the system includes four cameras, each equipped with a blue, green, red and yellow filter to match one of the colors of the Microsoft logo. Interestingly, the Microsoft logo is displayed by default, and when the cameras are activated, the logo disappears and the camera shutter is activated. On the other hand, when the camera system is not in use, the pixels on the cameras display the Microsoft logo or act as a notification light.

Maybe this The design may seem a little strange at first glance, but based on the description of this patent application, each camera is optimized for its own color. In terms of computer imaging, this approach can provide the device with enough data to capture impressive images. In addition, using multiple lenses and sensors instead of a single camera can result in a thinner product.

Of course, there are some drawbacks to this design. One is that using four cameras seems to be a bit of a chore. The issue of design is another problem that can be seen in the proposed model because the camera array is vulnerable to the way the software will process the software that will integrate them. It is also not clear that Microsoft can address the issue of quality in cameras under the screen. According to Microsoft, this technology can be used in phones, tablets and desktop screens; But one should not be too optimistic about offering this new design at a reasonable price, at least in the early stages.

As always, it should be borne in mind that this plan may not be implemented at least in the near future or may not materialize at all. The patent application was first filed with the USPTO in November 2019, and it is unclear whether Microsoft has been working on the project for the past two years or whether it has replaced it with more advanced technologies.
