Following the introduction of the new 20 Series handsets - the TCL 20 5G and TCL 20 SE - in January at CES 2021, TCL has unveiled other members of the family. The Chinese company on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 (April 25, 1400) unveiled three other smartphones in the 20 series under the titles TCL 20L, TCL 20 Pro 5G and + TCL 20L. The TCL 20 Pro 5G, meanwhile, has higher specs and is the second fifth-generation TCL phone to hit the US market after the TCL 10 5G UW - launched last year. The TCL 20L and the Plus version are similar in many ways, but lack 5G. In the following, we will get more acquainted with the specifications and features of these three devices.
TCL 20 Pro 5G smartphone is designed in the dimensions of 8.77 × 73 × 164.2 mm, but in some places it reaches a thickness of 9.07 mm. This phone weighs 190 grams and has 3D glass on the back and front. According to the manufacturer, this polished glass is light-reflecting and anti-fingerprint, and a layer called OPVD has been applied on it. Unlike some flagships, this phone is not water resistant, but the IP52 degree of protection protects it from raindrops. The device is available in Marine Blue and Moondust Gray.
According to TCL, what defines the company's new handsets are their screens. As you know, TCL has a lot of experience in building all kinds of monitors. The phone has a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with FHD + resolution, which increases its density to 394 pixels. The display - referred to by the manufacturer as the Dotch Display - covers 93% of the body surface and supports HDR10. 100% coverage of DCI-P3 color spectrum and maximum brightness of 700 nits are other features of this display.
Thanks to an additional chip - apparently made by the American company Pixelworks - this display can be used at the same time Convert SDR to HDR. Another point that TCL emphasizes in introducing the 20 Pro 5G is the display of the latest generation of NXTVISION technology. It is said that this technology, by identifying the display content, can adjust the color, contrast and sharpness according to the content. Not to mention, this display, with TÜV Rheinland certification, partially filters out the harmful blue rays of the screen.
Processing and Memory
The control room in the TCL 20 Pro 5G is powered by a Snapdragon 750G processor. The 8-nanometer chip consists of 2 2GHz Cortex-A77 cores and 6 1.8GHz Cortex-A55 cores, and is graphically processed by the Adreno 619. 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory are allocated to this device, of course, 239 GB of it is available to the user. It goes without saying that by adding a microSD card, the internal memory can be increased up to another 1 terabyte.
The camera set on the back of the device consists of 4 cameras. The interesting thing is that the cameras are not inside the module. More precisely, the lenses of the cameras are aligned with the back and none of them protrudes from the body of the device. The most important part of this set is a 48-megapixel camera (consisting of a Sony IMX582 sensor) that has a 6-piece lens with an aperture of f/1.79. Optical image stabilization and phase detection autofocus are other features of this camera.
The next member of the series is a 16-megapixel (f/2.4) ultraviolet camera with a 123-degree field of view. A 5-megapixel (f/2.2) macro camera and a 2-megapixel (f/2.4) depth camera complete the set. Features of the TCL 20 Pro 5G can record 4K video at 30 frames per second, zoom without loss of quality (according to TCL) up to 2x, digital zoom up to 10x, electronic image stabilization (EIS), night mode (Super Night Mode) 2.0), panorama mode, portrait mode, professional mode, landscape recognition, video bokeh, etc. Not to mention, the phone's selfie camera is 32-megapixel (with f/2.45 aperture and 80.4-degree field of view) and, like the main camera, can shoot at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. Battery
A 4,500 mAh battery is provided for the TCL 20 Pro 5G. This battery supports Quick Charge 3.0 technology and is charged with an 18-watt charger via the USB-C port. Of course, according to the manufacturer, it takes 2 hours to fully charge the battery, so it does not seem too fast. Interestingly, the TCL 20 Pro 5G also supports 15-watt wireless charging and is the first TCL phone to be equipped with wireless charging.
Operating Systems and Communications
The TCL 20 Pro 5G operating system is Android 11 and has a dedicated TCL UI. The manufacturer has guaranteed security updates for this phone until June 2023. The fingerprint sensor is embedded under the display layer and the Face Key feature is also provided for the device. The TCL 20 Pro 5G is a dual-SIM phone that supports 5G communication technology with a bandwidth of less than 6 GHz. However, according to TCL, this device can adapt to other 5G bands, depending on the type of operator. Headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC chip and support for GLONASS, Beidou, GPS and Galileo navigation systems are other communication features of this device.
This phone measures 9.1 x 76.9 x 166.2 mm and weighs 199 grams. 2.5-dimensional glass is used on the front of the phone (on the screen), but on the back of the device, a polymer called PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) or acrylic glass is used. Available in Black (Eclipse Black) and Blue (Luna Blue).
TCL 20L Display has not changed in size and resolution compared to 20 Pro 5G and here We also have the same Dotch Display with a diameter of 6.67 inches and FHD + resolution, with the difference that the type of display has been reduced from AMOLED to LCD (with IPS technology). The aspect ratio of the screen is 20: 9 and the screen to body ratio is 91%. NXTVISION technology is still present in this model. The maximum brightness of the display is 500 nits, and for better multitasking, a feature called Floating Window Mode is provided, in which the environment of running applications can be converted into small and moving windows.
According to the manufacturer, the TCL 20L is the first smartphone to receive Certifications for Circular Polarization as well as Low Blue Light from TÜV Rheinland. According to TCL, the ability to rotate the circle reduces the pressure on the eye by up to 85%. Also, thanks to this feature, if the user wears polarized sunglasses while working with this phone, he can see the phone well from any angle. Thanks to the Low Blue Light confirmation, up to 13% of the blue rays of the screen are filtered. Not to mention, black and white mode, reading mode and eye rest mode are other features of this device's display.
Chipset and Memory
The TCL 20L uses the Snapdragon 662 chipset. The chip consists of four 2 GHz Cortex-A73 cores and four 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and its graphics processing unit is Adreno 610. Depending on the model, the user has 4 or 6 GB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 128 GB, which can be upgraded to another 1 terabyte by adding a microSD.
The rectangular module on the back of the phone accommodates 4 cameras vertically: a 48-megapixel main camera with f/2.0 aperture and focus Auto, 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and 118-degree field of view, and two macro and depth cameras (each with a resolution of 2 megapixels and f/2.4 aperture). Zoom without loss of quality (according to TCL) up to 2 times and video recording with 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, are the most important features of the main camera. Not to mention, the front camera of the device is 16 megapixels (f/2.2) and can record video at 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second.
Perhaps the only advantage of the TCL 20L over the 20 Pro 5G is its higher battery capacity. In TCL 20L, we see the use of a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 18-watt charge and, of course, can also be charged with a 10-watt charger. The time required to fully charge the battery is 2 hours and 30 minutes with an 18-watt charger and 3 hours and 6 minutes with a 10-watt charger.
Android 11 operating system and communications
TCL UI are the software part of this phone. According to the manufacturer, security updates will be available for TCL 20L until April 2024. Due to the lack of an OLED display, the fingerprint sensor is built into the power button on this phone and the Face Key feature is still available. It is interesting to know that there is a dedicated button to call Google Assistant on the body of the phone. The TCL 20L lacks fifth-generation connectivity and is a dual-SIM 4G handset. Add a USB-C port, headphone jack, Bluetooth 5, NFC chip and support for GLONASS, Beidou, GPS and Galileo navigation systems to your list of connectivity features.
Many of the specifications of the Plus version are the same as the regular version, but differ in terms of memory and camera. The TCL 20L + comes in a single configuration with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage (expandable up to another 1TB). Another difference is the main camera of the Plus version, which has a resolution of 64 megapixels and an aperture of f/1.79. The other parts of the camera set, as well as the front camera, are the same as those used in the regular version, although on the TCL + 20L + profile page, the selfie camera's shooting speed has been increased to 60 frames per second. Not to mention, this phone is available in gray (Milky Way Gray) and blue (North Star Blue).
